PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial close of the camping season, with many campers making the most of the final days to relax and unwind in the great outdoors. Megan Waceken of News Source 8 reports.
For numerous parks and campgrounds, Labor Day weekend is the last significant surge of activity before the quiet of autumn sets in.
Aroostook State Park’s manager, Scott Thompson, noted the uptick in reservations leading up to the holiday. “We’ve seen a steady increase in bookings as people rush to enjoy the last weekend before our reservation system shuts down for the season,” Thompson said.
Throughout the summer, campground staff have been busy welcoming guests from near and far, offering them a slice of nature’s tranquility.
Claire Arndt, owner of Arndt Campground, reflected on the diversity of visitors. “We’ve had a lot of different people this summer—from local residents to travelers from states like Texas and Florida, escaping the heat. We’ve hosted everyone from workers to vacationers. It’s been a good summer,” Arndt shared.
Michelle Barnard, owner of KOA Journey Campground, echoed the sentiment. “We’ve had around 60 campers here, so we’re nearly at full capacity. Just a few spots left, waiting for the last-minute arrivals,” Barnard said.
However, as the summer season draws to a close, campers are now packing up their tents and readying their RVs for the journey back home. “We do have a bunch of seasonal campers who will be leaving this weekend, which is unfortunate,” Barnard added.
Despite the end of summer, campground officials anticipate continued activity in the coming months as campers take advantage of the changing seasons.
