Sammie Maxwell has secured her place in the New Zealand Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Games following a successful appeal to the Sports Tribunal. Originally overlooked for nomination by Cycling New Zealand (CNZ) due to concerns about her health and fitness, Maxwell challenged the decision alongside her lawyer Ian Hunt. The tribunal concluded that CNZ’s decision was based on outdated medical information, prompting Maxwell’s reinstatement to contention.
“I’m grateful for the support I’ve received throughout this challenging process,” Maxwell commented. “While there have been disagreements on how to approach my wellbeing, I appreciate everyone’s commitment to prioritizing my health.”
Maxwell, who will be the sole female representative in mountain biking for New Zealand, joins Sam Gaze as the country’s sole male competitor in the discipline. Both athletes have been welcomed by the New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) with enthusiasm.
“We congratulate Sam and Sammie on their selection,” said NZOC Chief Executive Nicki Nicol. “We are committed to ensuring they have the necessary support to perform at their peak in Paris, and we eagerly anticipate seeing them compete under the silver fern.”
Maxwell’s conditional selection ensures ongoing support for her health and wellbeing throughout the Olympic Games, highlighting a collaborative effort to facilitate her optimal performance on the international stage.
