Srinagar, July 3: Secretary of Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, highlighted the rapid transformation of Jammu and Kashmir into a leading sports destination within India, showcasing significant strides in winter, summer, and water sports initiatives.
In an exclusive interview with Kashmir News Service (KNS), Sarmad emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir has been recognized for the fourth consecutive time as the hub for Winter Sports Activities, solidifying its status as the Winter Sports Capital of India. He praised Gulmarg as “one of the finest ski resorts globally.”
The Winter Games have not only achieved success but also enhanced local infrastructure and provided invaluable exposure to athletes. Plans are underway to establish an Institute of Excellence in Skiing in Gulmarg, supported by the Government of India and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Regarding the expansion of Summer Sports, Sarmad noted unprecedented infrastructure development, ensuring every panchayat now has access to sports facilities. He highlighted the installation of floodlights in over 60 stadiums and playfields, facilitating evening play, along with the introduction of synthetic turfs for football and other sports in urban and rural areas. “Our focus is on identifying sporting talent in remote areas because genuine talent thrives in villages.”
In terms of Water Sports Initiatives, Sarmad highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s abundance of water bodies, making it an ideal venue for water sports. Two state-of-the-art water sports centers have been established under the Prime Minister’s Development Programme. “We boast top-tier equipment for water sports. A major water sports festival, including a national dragon boat festival, is scheduled within a month. Efforts are also underway to expand water sports activities to Manasbal Lake and Wular Lake.”
Reflecting on the successful Legends League in Jammu, Hafeez expressed optimism about replicating similar events in the Kashmir Valley, citing ample facilities for all types of sports.
When asked about Infrastructure Growth, Sarmad highlighted the construction of over 400 playgrounds last year alone, including AstroTurf stadiums in Poonch and Pulwama. “We are developing numerous football turfs across the UT. High-quality synthetic athletic tracks are being established at various locations.”
Regarding the increase in indoor stadiums, Sarmad mentioned that each district now has at least one indoor stadium, enabling Jammu and Kashmir to host multiple national games, including gymnastics and table tennis. “This year, we plan to host more than 20 national games, building on the success of last year.”
Regarding support for athletes, Sarmad mentioned that Jammu and Kashmir is the sole recipient in India of 100 Khelo India Centers, with five centers in every district providing infrastructure, equipment, and training under skilled sports mentors. “We aim to equip our athletes with the best facilities and gear.”
“We encourage everyone to actively participate in sports,” concluded Hafeez, urging parents to motivate their children to engage in sports for a healthier and more disciplined lifestyle.
