Builder Tommy Dunford, 33, accomplished a remarkable feat by scaling Yr Wyddfa, formerly known as Snowdon, carrying a 40kg tumble dryer on his back. This challenging endeavor spanned a grueling 9.5-mile journey up and down the 3,500-foot mountain, which he undertook to raise funds for the renovation of his local rugby team’s clubhouse in Horbury, West Yorkshire, where he coaches.
Tommy, a father of three, conceived the idea last year and diligently prepared by training with the bulky appliance strapped to his back around the hills of his hometown. His efforts paid off as the initiative garnered significant attention and support, amassing over £6,000 in donations so far.
Reflecting on the strenuous ascent, Tommy described the unpredictable weather conditions he faced, ranging from sweltering heat at the start to mist and rain as he ascended through the clouds. Despite the physical challenges, his determination never wavered, driven by his commitment to support Dewsbury Celtic RLFC in modernizing their clubhouse, an establishment close to his heart since his youth.
Tommy’s inspiration stemmed in part from Michael Copeland, who famously carried a fridge to Snowdon’s summit in 2022. Tommy’s own journey with the Hotpoint tumble dryer, acquired from a local scrap yard, required additional modifications for safe transport, including custom straps and brackets.
The funds raised by Tommy’s feat will contribute to a broader effort aiming to raise approximately £25,000 for clubhouse renovations, addressing long-standing needs to update the facility, which dates back to Tommy’s early days playing rugby.
Dewsbury Celtic RLFC holds personal significance for Tommy, as his grandfather once played for the club after immigrating from Ireland. Tommy himself joined the club following a challenging recovery period from cancer, finding solace and community in rugby. Today, he coaches the club’s under-8s team, carrying forward a tradition of camaraderie and support that has been integral to his life since childhood.
