Downhill Mountain Biking Thrives at Killington Resort

by Alice

Killington Resort’s downhill mountain biking scene is more than a sport; it’s a catalyst for building community, transforming strangers into friends.

On Saturday, June 1, a diverse group of bikers gathered in the Snowshoe parking lot, taking a break from the trails. This impromptu assembly included enthusiasts from Canada, Pennsylvania, and Saratoga Springs, New York, who only met because they parked next to each other.

To an observer, they appeared to be lifelong friends, their camaraderie evident through shared laughter and stories.

“I think the fun part about mountain biking is that you don’t necessarily meet the same people each time. Since you all know the same things, it’s easy to strike up a conversation out of nowhere. You can make friends within a day, never get their phone numbers, but have a great time,” said Chris Miller from Saratoga Springs.

Neal Capell, a first-time rider at Killington, was impressed by both the trails and the instant friendships. “The mountain biking community is great. There are so many friendly people with welcoming personalities. Everyone is on the trails for the same reason: to enjoy themselves,” said Capell, who traveled from Canada. “Most people are happy to see you on the trails and are usually welcoming and interested in chatting.”

Conversations ranged from family and children to their shared passion for biking.

“Mountain biking is super chill, and I don’t think anyone has ever run into a mountain biker who has been standoffish. Everyone wants to be your friend and hang out,” said Conner Kelly, also from Canada.

The group agreed that newcomers should seek lessons and friendships to enhance their experience. Chris Trishee, visiting from Pennsylvania, advised, “Go at your own pace and stay within your comfort level. It’s okay to ask for advice.”

Trishee himself experienced a minor mishap, taking a berm too fast and wiping out. Yet, he didn’t let it ruin his day. Laughing it off in the parking lot with his new friends, he reflected, “That’s downhill mountain biking. Things happen, but having new and old friends at the end of the day makes the pain better.”
