Bike Culver City is set to host an enlightening session featuring Yolanda Davis-Overstreet, a prominent figure in the realm of mobility justice. Davis-Overstreet will provide a comprehensive overview of her impactful three-year journey, during which she spearheaded the creation of two short film docuseries shedding light on the experience of “Biking While Black.” Additionally, she will share key insights gleaned from her extensive research, which are encapsulated in the advocacy guide titled “Reimagine Biking While Black: A Road Map to Advocacy & Joy Guide.”
Davis-Overstreet’s endeavors have been supported by the Go Human Mini-Grant program, which awarded her funding in both 2021 and 2022. The resulting documentaries, “Biking While Black: How Safe Are Black Lives Bicycling?” (2021) and “Biking While Black: Continuing to Ride Through Decriminalization, Disenfranchisement, and Gentrification” (2022), delve into the daily challenges faced by Black cyclists and tackle critical issues such as police enforcement, historical infrastructure disinvestment, racism, racial profiling, and systemic inequalities.
Building upon the foundation laid by these films, Davis-Overstreet published the “Reimagine Biking While Black: Roadmap to Justice and Joy Advocacy Guide” in 2023. This community-driven initiative amplifies the voices of mobility justice advocates and highlights actionable steps to address transportation inequities in Los Angeles. Through personal narratives, data-driven insights, and practical resources, the guide offers a culturally centered approach to fostering safer and more inclusive streets within communities of color.
During the upcoming session, Davis-Overstreet will screen her second documentary, “Biking While Black: Continuing to Ride Through Decriminalization, Disenfranchisement, and Gentrification.” Following the screening, participants will have the opportunity to engage in training facilitated by Davis-Overstreet, where they will learn to apply her proven advocacy strategies to effect meaningful change in addressing transportation disparities.
