Efforts Underway to Locate Three Missing Climbers near Squamish

A search operation is currently underway for three mountaineers reported missing in the vicinity north of Squamish.

The trio, described as seasoned climbers, embarked on an ascent of Mount Atwell within Garibaldi Park on Friday afternoon. However, since then, there has been no communication from them, as reported by Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR).

BJ Chute of Squamish SAR informed CityNews that the organization was notified on Friday evening to lend assistance. Chute emphasized the ongoing status of the operation as an active search, noting the absence of any contact with the missing climbers.

“These were experienced mountaineers, not just casual hikers, so they possess the necessary skills to navigate the technical terrain in which we believe they are located,” Chute remarked.

The Squamish RCMP has also joined the effort, collaborating with SAR teams and other resources. Aerial reconnaissance utilizing helicopters, alongside ground searches conducted by local mountain guides, has been initiated. Additionally, support has been enlisted from the Royal Canadian Airforce 442 squadron.

The search operation has encountered challenges exacerbated by adverse weather conditions and the remote, rugged terrain. Mounties have cited extreme avalanche risk within the area as further complicating factors hindering progress.
