The first stage of the eight-day Critérium du Dauphiné kicked off and concluded in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule. A breakaway duo managed to stay ahead for a significant portion of the race, but the sprinters’ teams kept a vigilant eye on them, ensuring they remained within reach. The breakaway was ultimately caught 15 kilometers from the finish line. Team Visma | Lease a Bike chose not to contest the sprint finish, where Pedersen emerged victorious.
Co-leader Matteo Jorgenson expressed his anticipation for the more challenging stages ahead. “I am satisfied that we all crossed the line safely,” the 24-year-old American remarked. “The finale was intense, but it stayed safe. It wasn’t an overly tough opening stage, but there’s a lot more to come in the next week.”
Sports director Frans Maassen praised his team’s execution of the plan. “This stage unfolded as we expected. The sprinters’ teams took control of the peloton, so we didn’t have to initiate any moves. Our goal was to keep our leaders, Jorgenson and Sepp Kuss, well-positioned, and we achieved that with flair. There are many crucial stages remaining in this Dauphiné, particularly the final weekend, which is very demanding. We aim to make a significant impact on the general classification then.”
