Swiss watchmaker Tudor has debuted a specialized carbon fibre watch tailored to the demands of its Tudor Pro Cycling team, currently making waves at their inaugural Grand Tour appearance at the Giro d’Italia.
The latest release is a cycling-focused iteration of their Pelagos FXD Chrono, an automatic timepiece featuring a stopwatch function.
Sporting a price tag of £4,560 / 4850 CHF, this luxury Swiss watch is a standout accessory in the world of high-end cycling gear, offering a compelling alternative to more conventional cycling accessories.
The distinctive features of this cycling edition watch include a carbon composite case, aligning seamlessly with the performance-oriented ethos of cycling. While the specific weight remains undisclosed by Tudor, the carbon fibre construction is anticipated to render the watch marginally lighter compared to its stainless steel counterparts.
Beyond its basic timing functionality, the watch boasts cycling-specific enhancements. Notably, the case incorporates fixed strap bars, eschewing the typical spring bars found on most watches to ensure the strap remains secure during rides.
Encircling the stopwatch is a scale of printed numbers known as a tachymeter, a hallmark feature of motorsport-inspired timepieces. Tudor has calibrated the tachymeter speeds to cater specifically to cyclists, spanning speeds between 20kph and 60kph, facilitating on-the-go speed calculations. Though not a substitute for precision GPS data, it serves as an intriguing design element.
Despite its cyclist-friendly attributes, this watch leans more towards lifestyle elegance rather than pure performance tech. Members of the Tudor Pro Cycling Team, notably debuting at this year’s Giro, have been spotted wearing the timepiece primarily during press engagements and sign-ons rather than during the demanding stages of the race.
While not engineered for marginal gains on the bike, this offering epitomizes the marriage of luxury and cycling technology, elevating the concept of high-end bike gear to a new echelon.
