Stacie Bytwork, President of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce and a board member of Networks Northwest, highlighted the study’s role in identifying opportunities within the recreational sector. Bytwork emphasized the importance of strategic planning to foster growth and make the region an attractive destination for businesses and visitors alike.

Manistee County boasted an average disposable income of $65,400, while Benzie County excelled with an average of $71,850, both surpassing the national average of $58,870.

The report also outlined potential growth areas within the region’s outdoor economy, including camping equipment, bicycles (including e-bikes), e-boats, and expanded outdoor services like outfitters, rental shops, and guides. Notably, the study identified e-bikes as a promising niche, suggesting their integration into local businesses catering to outdoor enthusiasts.

As the region anticipates steady population growth, driven by an influx of retirement-aged individuals, the demand for outdoor activities and services is expected to rise. The study advocates for targeted business investments in camping equipment, bicycles, and sports and recreational equipment to capitalize on this demographic shift.

Funded by a 2023 Michigan Economic Development Corporation Collaborative Development Council Regional Grant, this comprehensive study underscores the economic potential of outdoor recreation in northwest Lower Michigan, highlighting opportunities for sustained growth and development across the region.
