Victoria Council Approves Plan to End Camping in Vic West and Irving Park

by Alice

In a recent decision, Victoria’s Committee of the Whole has voted 7-2 in favor of gradually phasing out camping activities in Vic West Park and Irving Park by this summer.

The approved motion includes directives for city staff to collaborate with BC Housing, relevant service providers, and the City’s sheltering Relocation Coordinator to facilitate indoor sheltering or housing options for individuals currently residing in the parks.

Following the implementation of these measures, there will be a structured phase-out period leading up to the eventual prohibition of overnight sheltering in the two greenspaces. This transition is set to be formalized through updates to the Parks Regulation Bylaw, with the aim of fully implementing the changes by August 1st.
