The Fort Myers Beach Public Safety Committee is set to convene today at 9 AM to deliberate on the municipality’s approach to promoting bike safety. This issue has garnered significant attention recently, with growing discourse among elected officials regarding the need to encourage more biking and walking on the island, albeit with limited progress in ensuring safety measures.
Presently, regulations on Fort Myers Beach dictate that only pedal-operated bicycles are permitted on sidewalks, while any form of battery-powered bikes is expressly prohibited. This prohibition extends even to situations where cyclists are manually pedaling without utilizing the bike’s power, as distinguishing this circumstance poses a challenge for law enforcement.
A prominent concern highlighted by residents and cyclists pertains to the absence of dedicated bike lanes along Estero Boulevard, particularly the segment stretching from Red Coconut to Times Square.
The Public Safety Committee will convene to address these pressing issues on Tuesday at 9 AM, with the meeting scheduled to take place at the town hall trailers. Members of the public are allotted three minutes each for participation during the public comment session. Although live coverage of the meeting will not be available today, viewers are encouraged to tune in via the town’s YouTube Channel, with a rebroadcast expected promptly thereafter.
