After fifteen years of operation, Viking Kayak and SUP, a long-standing local water sports equipment business situated on Nicklin Way at Warana, has announced its closure. Daniele Giannatempo, the proprietor, shared the news via social media, expressing regret over the decision, which will see the store shutter its doors on May 24.
Since its establishment, Viking Kayak and SUP has been a staple in the community, providing a wide array of water sports equipment, including paddle, pedal, and motor-powered kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, water bikes, accessories, and more. Notably, the store boasts the distinction of being the sole kayak shop in Australia equipped with an indoor test pool.
In a heartfelt post signed off by “Daniele and the Team,” the owners expressed gratitude for the years of dedicated service and the lasting connections forged with customers. The decision to close follows the sale of the esteemed Viking kayak brand, marking the end of an era for the beloved establishment.
The announcement garnered an outpouring of support from the community, with tributes flooding in from loyal customers and kayak enthusiasts alike. Many reminisced about their experiences at the store and expressed sadness over its impending closure.
As preparations for the closure are underway, the store plans to host a clearance sale, offering over $240,000 worth of stock at discounted prices, with many items priced below cost. The sale is not only an opportunity for customers to snag bargains but also a chance for the store to express gratitude to the community for its unwavering support over the years.
Viking Kayaks, originally founded in New Zealand in 1999 by Grant Montague, faced adversity when its factory in Matamata was ravaged by fire in January 2022. Despite the setback, the brand was sold to another company, and Viking Australia relocated to the Central Coast.
While the closure marks the end of an era for Viking Kayak and SUP, warranties for their products will continue to be honored by Viking Australia, ensuring continued support for customers. As the store prepares to bid farewell, it invites the community to join in celebrating its legacy and the shared memories that have enriched the journey over the years.
