In an unexpected turn during the 2025 NFL Draft, Jacksonville Jaguars trade up to pick versatile player Travis Hunter at No. 2, while QB-needy teams pass on Shedeur Sanders.
Jaguars Move to No. 2 for Travis Hunter
The 2025 NFL Draft began as expected with Miami’s talented quarterback Cam Ward being selected first overall by the Tennessee Titans. However, it was Jacksonville’s move that shocked many. The Jaguars, previously holding the fifth pick, traded up to take the Cleveland Browns’ No. 2 spot. Jacksonville selected Travis Hunter, a player known for his versatility, excelling both as a wide receiver and a cornerback. To complete the trade, the Jaguars sent Cleveland four picks, including their second- and fourth-rounders in 2025 and a 2026 first-rounder.
Shedeur Sanders Left Waiting
One notable absence in the draft was Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Despite some scouts believing he might be a top pick, concerns over his arm strength left him waiting. The Steelers, rumored to be interested in Sanders, selected defensive tackle Derrick Harmon at No. 21 instead. The New York Giants, after trading for the No. 25 pick, also chose a quarterback, opting for Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. Sanders now faces an uncertain future and will have to wait until at least the second round to hear his name called.
Cam Ward Leads the First Round
Cam Ward, chosen by the Titans, had a remarkable college career, breaking records in his lone season at Miami. He threw 39 touchdowns, passed for 4,313 yards, and led the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record. Ward’s selection marks Tennessee’s fourth first-round quarterback pick in two decades, following Marcus Mariota, Jake Locker, and Vince Young. The Titans hope Ward will help them break their playoff drought.
Other Notable Picks in the First Round
As the draft continued, the New York Giants strengthened their defense by selecting Abdul Carter, a Penn State defensive end who led the nation in tackles for loss and sacks. The Patriots chose offensive tackle Will Campbell to protect quarterback Drake Maye. Meanwhile, the Raiders selected running back Ashton Jeanty to address their weak rushing offense, and the Browns picked Michigan’s Mason Graham to bolster their defensive line.
Packers’ Long-Awaited WR Pick
The Green Bay Packers made a long-awaited decision by selecting Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden at No. 23, ending a 23-year dry spell of not picking a receiver in the first round.
Looking Ahead
With several key players still available, the second round of the draft promises more surprises. For Sanders and other players waiting, their futures will unfold in the coming days.
