Türkiye Strengthens Ties with Uganda through Race and Donations

On March 18, 2025, Türkiye’s ambassador to Uganda, Fatih Ak, flagged off a bicycle race featuring Turkish cyclists in the East African country. The race, which included both Turkish and Ugandan women participants, was part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and foster deeper humanitarian cooperation between the two nations.

During the event, Ambassador Ak emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to enhancing ties with Uganda. He also presented 100 bicycles to Ugandan Minister of State for Defense and Veteran Affairs, Huda Abason Oleru, alongside 100 Ramadan packages provided by the Turkish Keskul organization and Kadin-Tis, two Turkish charity groups active in humanitarian work.

The bicycle race, which aimed to encourage collaboration between the two countries, was attended by several key figures. Among them were Justine Lumumba Kasule, the Minister of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, Naima Melsa Gule Avako, a member of parliament for Yumbe in northern Uganda, and Murat Cetin, Country Director of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) in Uganda. Additionally, Ismail Ssimbwa Jagenda, rector of the Islamic University in Uganda, also participated.

Esra Oksay, chairperson of Kadin-Tis, expressed her pride in supporting Ugandan women and promoting their involvement in business. “As the Women’s Trade Employers Union, we are pleased to assist women in Africa, especially in Uganda, and we look forward to continuing our projects with our Ugandan partners,” she said, highlighting the focus on rural women.

Ambassador Ak highlighted the growing humanitarian collaboration between Türkiye and Uganda, noting that several Turkish NGOs are actively working in the country to support various initiatives.

Through events like the bicycle race and charitable donations, Türkiye continues to deepen its humanitarian engagement with Uganda, aiming to support both women’s empowerment and the overall development of the East African nation.
