Renowned photographer Dominique Powers takes fans behind the lens with her latest work, All The Way Up, now available for an international book tour across the UK, Europe, and the US.
The 2024 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift concluded in one of the most thrilling finales in cycling history. After seven days of grueling competition, 950 kilometers of racing, and over 13,500 meters of elevation, the third edition of the women’s Tour came down to a mere four seconds—marking the smallest margin of victory in the event’s history.
The final stage, a punishing ascent to the iconic Alpe d’Huez, saw critical bonus seconds up for grabs: 10 for the winner, 6 for second, and 4 for third. With the General Classification leaderboard tightly packed within 1 minute and 27 seconds, the race was poised for an intense showdown between yellow-jersey holder Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) and defending champion Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime), who was 1:15 behind and had a real chance to reclaim the lead.
Vollering crossed the Alpe d’Huez summit first, claiming both the stage victory and the 10 bonus seconds. Fans and riders alike waited in anticipation as Niewiadoma made her final push for the line. It was an agonizing wait, but Niewiadoma clinched the victory, stopping the clock just in time to secure her lead and win the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
This dramatic conclusion is captured in All The Way Up, the second photo book by Dominique Powers, the Los Angeles-based photographer who has become one of the most in-demand figures in cycling photography.
Powers’ new book not only serves as a tribute to the athletes who made history but also emphasizes the importance of women’s cycling and women’s sports as a whole. In an interview with Cycling Weekly, she explained her motivation: “It’s about elevating and amplifying these athletes and the work around women’s cycling and women’s sport. It’s a way to solidify their status—not just through journalism or social media, but through an art book that takes up space and lasts.”
Despite being relatively new to the cycling world, Powers’ rise to prominence has been swift. A former art educator from Vermont, Powers transitioned into commercial photography in New York City before discovering her passion for cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic. She quickly integrated into the cycling community and launched The Leaders of Gravel in 2021, a series highlighting influential women in U.S. gravel cycling. This project accelerated her career, leading her to cover the 2023 Tour de France Femmes, after which she released her first book, Encore.
All The Way Up builds on her previous work, blending portraits of athletes, candid race shots, and intense moments from the competition, as well as the raw emotion that defines the sport.
For Powers, the creation of the book itself is a significant achievement. “Just the making of the book is such a feat—so many hours spent living with the images, working on the layouts, and thinking about how they come together to tell the story,” she said.
The 2024 edition of the Tour de France Femmes holds particular significance for Powers. With the race still in its early stages since its revival, each edition feels historic. Powers reflected on the intense finale between Niewiadoma and Vollering, saying, “I still get excited about it. The very end of the book tells the story of the finish of stage eight, and knowing how it all played out, the timing… The photos are laid out to convey that tension. I smile just thinking about it.”
To celebrate the launch, Powers is embarking on a month-long international book tour, with events at Paris-Roubaix Femmes avec Zwift and Rapha clubhouses across Europe and the US. These events will offer fans an exclusive look behind the scenes, the chance to purchase a limited-edition copy of All The Way Up, and possibly meet the photographer herself.
Powers also adds a personal touch to the books, leaving space for buyers to add dedications, a feature that was popular with readers of her previous work. “It was really sweet to write personal notes for people who were getting it for their mom, friend, or mentor in cycling,” she shared.
While All The Way Up is centered around cycling, Powers hopes the book transcends the sport, offering something for a wider audience. “It’s not just for fans of women’s cycling. There are so many moments in it that aren’t just about the racing; it’s before and after, the emotions, and different aspects of what the race looks like, all presented in a way that elevates it.”
The book will be available for online sales starting May 4th on Powers’ website, but collectors should act quickly, as only a limited number of copies have been printed.
For cycling fans and collectors alike, All The Way Up promises to be a must-have memento of one of the most exciting editions of the Tour de France Femmes yet.
