Outdoor retailer REI is significantly expanding its cycling business, announcing an exclusive partnership with Van Rysel for its gravel bike collection. Starting in April 2025, REI will become the sole U.S. retailer for Van Rysel’s gravel line, with new models set to launch later this spring.
Van Rysel, a French cycling brand and subsidiary of sports retailer Decathlon, has garnered increased attention recently due to its sponsorship of the Decathlon-Ag2r La Mondiale WorldTour team. The team competes on the Van Rysel RCR Pro, a highly discussed model in 2024. Designed in collaboration with the French aerospace research laboratory, Swiss Side wheel manufacturer, and Deda Elementi, the RCR Pro stands out as one of the most affordable bikes in the pro peloton.
The new Van Rysel gravel bikes, crafted with an aluminum frame, are tailored for adventure riders rather than competitive cyclists. These bikes will be available both in-store and online through REI’s website.
“As gravel riding’s popularity continues to surge, we’re dedicated to offering more choices for riders tackling mixed terrain—whether for racing, bikepacking, or recreational rides,” said Kelley Hemminger, REI’s senior category merchandise manager. “Our exclusive partnership with Van Rysel will give REI customers access to a performance-driven brand focused on this evolving category.”
This expansion also includes collaborations with Rocky Mountain, a Canadian mountain bike brand; Swift Industries, a Seattle-based bikepacking accessory company; and cycling apparel brands Stio and Peppermint Cycling.
Additionally, REI has recently partnered with Canyon Bicycles to provide in-store servicing for the direct-to-consumer brand. Although Canyon continues to sell bikes exclusively online, customers can now access bike servicing at one of REI’s 190 locations.
“We’re committed to offering both beginner and dedicated cyclists a broader selection in our stores,” said Alicia Applegate, REI’s divisional merchandising manager. “By expanding our offerings beyond our current lineup and providing nationwide bicycle service, REI is making it easier for customers to access quality gear with excellent member benefits and enjoy their rides.”
