The British National Road Championships will be held in Wales for the next three years, from 2025 through to 2027, British Cycling has confirmed.
The UK’s cycling governing body has signed a significant agreement with the Welsh Government, ensuring the country will host the prestigious event for the next three editions. The deal follows a week after Wales was also announced as the host for a stage of the 2027 Tour de France, marking a historic first for the nation.
This year’s National Road Championships, now sponsored by Lloyds, will take place in Aberystwyth, a town in the county of Ceredigion, which is also home to Flèche Wallonne winner Stevie Williams and reigning British time trial champion Josh Tarling. The event will commence with the time trials on Thursday, June 26, followed by the circuit races on Friday, June 27. The road races will conclude the competition on Sunday, June 29. Details regarding the events in 2026 and 2027 are expected to be announced later.
The announcement of this three-year partnership with the Welsh Government is described as a “huge milestone” by Jonathan Day, managing director of British Cycling Events. “Wales has consistently been a strong supporter of major cycling events, and the growing popularity of the National Road Championships among riders and fans makes it an exciting prospect to continue working with our Welsh partners,” Day said in a press statement.
Wales has been a prominent host for cycling events, having recently welcomed the first two stages of the Tour of Britain Women, as well as several editions of the Tour of Britain Men.
Rebecca Evans, cabinet secretary for economy, energy, and planning for the Welsh Government, called the new deal “excellent news,” further solidifying Wales’ position as a leading destination for elite cycling. “This announcement, following the confirmation of the Tour de France’s first-ever visit to Wales in 2027, is a major step forward in strengthening our appeal for world-class cycling events,” Evans stated.
The last two British National Road Championships were held in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, where Ethan Hayter (Soudal Quick-Step) and Pfeiffer Georgi (Picnic PostNL) claimed the elite road race titles. In the time trials, Anna Henderson (Lidl-Trek) and Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers) triumphed.
Further details regarding the specific routes for this year’s edition will be revealed by British Cycling in the coming weeks.
