Vingegaard to Miss Volta a Catalunya After Paris-Nice Crash

by Alice

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard will not compete in next week’s Volta a Catalunya due to a wrist injury sustained in a crash during the Paris-Nice race last week.

Vingegaard, who was involved in a minor incident on stage five of Paris-Nice, injured his wrist when he fell from his bike. As a precautionary measure, his team, Visma-Lease a Bike, withdrew him from the race ahead of stage six.

Originally slated to race in the Volta a Catalunya, which starts in northern Spain on March 24, Vingegaard will instead focus on his recovery. The team announced the decision on social media Wednesday, confirming that Vingegaard’s recovery time was a priority. In his absence, Simon Yates will lead the team at the Spanish event.

“Jonas Vingegaard has not yet recovered sufficiently from his crash in Paris-Nice. Therefore, he will not start in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya,” Visma-Lease a Bike stated in a brief post on X. “We wish him a speedy recovery.”

After Vingegaard was pulled from Paris-Nice, Visma-Lease a Bike kept details of his condition under wraps. Initially, there was speculation that the Danish rider had fractured his wrist, but the team’s head of racing, Grischa Niermann, clarified the situation in a press briefing.

“We did some x-rays, but it doesn’t seem like anything is broken, although it is still very painful for him and he is not feeling well after the crash,” Niermann explained at a press conference in Berre l’Etang.

Looking ahead, Vingegaard’s next potential race is the Critérium du Dauphiné in June, where he will likely face Tadej Pogačar before returning to the Tour de France in July. If no additional races are added to his schedule, the Dauphiné will mark his second competitive race of the season, ahead of the Tour.

Meanwhile, following his victory in Paris-Nice, Matteo Jorgenson was asked if he felt ready to lead Visma-Lease a Bike in a Grand Tour. “Now it’s time to set the bar higher,” Jorgenson said. “I can’t say that I’m capable of winning a Grand Tour, but at least I want to try. I want to work towards that.”
