A “Black Hole” in the Pacific Ocean? Debunking the Myth

by Alice

A Google Maps image that surfaced on Reddit has sparked a flurry of speculation, with some suggesting the presence of a mysterious “black hole” in the Pacific Ocean. Here’s the truth behind the viral claim.

In a scene reminiscent of the absurdity from a classic Chappelle’s Show skit, Reddit users have run wild with theories, treating the internet as a vast mall of bizarre possibilities—complete with conspiracies and wild assumptions. This time, an image posted on the r/GoogleMaps thread in 2021 raised eyebrows. The image depicted a triangular black patch seemingly surrounded by blue ocean, leading many to wonder: Could this be a hole in the ocean? A black hole? Or even a secret military site, hidden from public view? Some even suggested extraterrestrial involvement.

The reality, however, is much simpler. The mysterious “black hole” is actually Vostok Island, a small, uninhabited landmass about the size of 0.1 square miles, located within the Republic of Kiribati in the South Pacific. The island’s dark appearance is due to its dense population of Pisonia trees, which, from above, create a shadowy effect.

Pisonia trees, especially the Pisonia grandis species found in the Indo-Pacific region, are unique in their dense growth patterns. These trees are known for their dark green leaves, which, when viewed from a height, can appear nearly black. According to JSTOR Daily, Pisonia trees have an unusual relationship with birds: They rely on seabirds like terns, noddies, and boobies to help disperse their seeds. The trees thrive in the nutrient-rich soil provided by the birds’ guano, making the island a special ecosystem for both trees and birds.

So, while the internet’s imagination may have conjured up images of black holes and alien encounters, the reality is much more grounded: It’s just an island with a forest of trees. Still, for those seeking deeper mysteries, Reddit’s ongoing speculation about drones continues to captivate.
