Kayaker Survives Being Swallowed by Whale Off Chilean Coast

by Alice

In a remarkable event that could easily be mistaken for a biblical tale, a kayaker in Chile was swallowed whole by a whale—only to emerge alive and unharmed. The unusual incident occurred off the coast of Punta Arenas, Chile, leaving the kayaker with an extraordinary story to tell.

Adrián Simancas, who was out on the water with a few friends, shared his experience with The Guardian. Simancas, who seemed remarkably composed, recounted the moment he was engulfed by the massive sea creature. “Yes, I thought it had already eaten me and swallowed me,” he said. “At first, I assumed it was a killer whale, an orca, since we had just been talking about them. But when I emerged, I realized it was likely out of curiosity, or perhaps trying to communicate something.”

Chile, known for its vast coastline and rich marine biodiversity, is home to some of the world’s most stunning and diverse ecosystems. The country’s waters are teeming with life, and its coastline offers an abundance of waves and surf spots, particularly left-hand point breaks. The landscape, with its rugged beauty and cold waters, is often compared to California’s coastline, attracting both locals and visitors who celebrate the sea’s offerings.

While orcas, also known as killer whales, are at the top of the marine food chain—famously hunting great white sharks and even removing their livers—there have been no recorded attacks on humans by orcas. This is true for other whale species as well, which, despite their enormous size, are generally known for their docile nature.

According to global statistics on dangerous animals, whales—along with orcas—remain far down the list of lethal creatures, especially when compared to more common threats like mosquitoes, which are responsible for 750,000 deaths per year. Other animals, such as snakes and dogs, cause tens of thousands of fatalities annually, while sharks are responsible for an average of just six deaths each year.
