Rising star Lucas Godfrey suffered a serious back injury while surfing Backdoor on February 7, during one of the most intense surf sessions on Oahu’s North Shore this winter. The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of the WSL Pipe Pro waiting period, as conditions provided some of the biggest and most challenging waves of the season.
On that fateful Friday morning, the swell began to build dramatically, surpassing forecasts and reaching impressive heights by the afternoon. As the waves pumped, the crowd of surfers eager to take advantage of the conditions swelled to over 50 participants, all vying for prime positions in the water. The excitement was palpable, but the situation took a dramatic turn when Godfrey, known for his prowess at Pipeline, suffered a catastrophic wipeout at Backdoor.
Godfrey, who has gained a reputation as one of the most talented young surfers on the North Shore, was unable to regain control of his board after the wipeout. He was struck by the wave’s lip, which hit him directly on the head, and was rocked by the powerful explosion of whitewater. Surfers in the area quickly realized the severity of the situation and rushed to assist, with lifeguards and fellow surfers alike scrambling to ensure his safety.
Among those who immediately responded was 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, who raced from the beach to help in the water. The North Shore Lifeguards responded swiftly with a jet ski and ATV, but the heavy surf made it difficult for the rescue team to approach Godfrey directly. Surfers in the lineup managed to keep him afloat, and a lifeguard carefully extracted him from the water, ensuring his head and neck were stabilized during the process. Godfrey was conscious but in severe pain, and his injuries remained unclear at that time.
He was transported to the hospital, where it was confirmed that he had suffered a broken back and would require spinal surgery. Despite the severity of his injuries, Godfrey is in stable condition. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover his medical expenses, and supporters are encouraged to share the link to aid in his recovery.
Lucas Godfrey is widely regarded as one of the top up-and-coming surfers on the North Shore, frequently earning praise for his exceptional performances at Pipeline. His resilience and talent have made him a regular standout in one of the most competitive surf scenes in the world.
As Godfrey begins the road to recovery, the surfing community is rallying behind him with heartfelt support, keeping him in their thoughts during this challenging time.
