In a move that reflects the changing dynamics of surf sponsorship, Newcastle’s Ryan Callinan has signed with Rivvia Projects, the surf apparel company owned by former Championship Tour (CT) surfer Julian Wilson. Callinan, a standout goofyfoot known for his vertical backhand and mastery of tube riding, becomes the first surfer to represent the brand on the CT circuit.
Callinan’s decision comes after parting ways with Billabong, his long-time sponsor, which chose not to renew his contract after 19 years. Although Callinan has yet to secure a CT victory over six seasons, his talent remains undeniable, and his move to Rivvia signifies a broader trend of elite surfers aligning with smaller, surfer-owned companies.
Rivvia, which represents the growing wave of independent brands led by pro surfers, follows in the footsteps of John John Florence’s Florence, Dane Reynolds’ Former + Chapter 11, and Kolohe Andino’s Steko. Callinan’s partnership with Rivvia, however, marks the first time one of these brands will be represented at the highest level of competitive surfing.
In addition to becoming a team rider, Callinan has also reportedly acquired equity in Rivvia Projects, making him a part owner of the brand. Wilson, who launched Rivvia Projects with a vision to create a more personalized and authentic surfwear company, expressed his pride in Callinan’s involvement.
“Ryan embodies the values and ethos of Rivvia Projects. His reputation speaks for itself, both in and out of the water,” said Wilson, who retired from competitive surfing in 2021 to focus on family but is now eyeing a potential CT comeback. “I’m beyond proud to have Ryan represent Rivvia as both a team rider and part owner. This is a monumental step for the brand.”
As Callinan prepares to fly the Rivvia flag on the CT stage, the partnership between the two Newcastle surfers could signal a shift in how professional surf sponsorships evolve in the coming years.
