Evenepoel Aims for February Return After Injury

by Alice

Remco Evenepoel is steadily recovering from a serious injury sustained last month and is now planning to return to training on the rollers this weekend. The multiple Olympic gold medalist is aiming for a gradual comeback to road cycling, with hopes of resuming outdoor training by February.

Evenepoel, 24, was involved in a training accident in December when he was struck by a Belgian post vehicle. The impact caused him to suffer multiple injuries, including a broken rib, hand, and shoulder blade, along with contusions to his lungs and a dislocated clavicle. His bike, a gold S-Works model, was also destroyed in the crash.

In a statement from his team, Soudal Quick-Step, Evenepoel shared an update on his recovery and outlined his plans for the 2025 season. Despite the setback, the Belgian rider remains focused on returning to top form, with a specific goal of securing a strong result at the Tour de France.

“The first few weeks after the accident were tough, especially since it occurred just as I was gearing up to start my training,” Evenepoel reflected. “I tried to stay positive during the holidays, and things are definitely improving now. It’s been nearly five weeks since I last participated in any proper training, so it’s been a 10-week break from the bike.”

Evenepoel emphasized that his immediate focus is on rehabilitation and getting back on the rollers by this Saturday. He plans to combine indoor riding with physiotherapy sessions as he rebuilds strength. Though mentally prepared to return, Evenepoel is taking a cautious approach to avoid overexerting himself and risking further injury, particularly to his shoulder.

“The reason I’m not riding outdoors yet is because my shoulder isn’t ready to handle the impact of road training,” he explained. “My goal is to be back on the road by early February, which would be the best-case scenario for now.”

Reflecting on the timing of the injury, Evenepoel noted the difficulty of the setback, especially given that it was his second injury on the same side in a year. He had been coming off a highly successful summer, one of the best periods of his career. However, with the strong support of his family and team, he has remained focused on his recovery.

Looking ahead to his return to racing, Evenepoel is targeting Brabantse Pijl in the Classics as his comeback event. If his recovery goes according to plan, he may also compete in Tour de Romandie, the Critérium du Dauphiné, and the Belgian National Championships.

“One-day races are generally easier to return to after an injury than stage races,” he said. “I’m particularly excited about the Ardennes Classics, and I hope to be in good shape by then, in about three months.”

Following his spring races, Evenepoel plans to head to higher altitudes for a final preparation phase before the Tour de France, where he intends to be in peak form.

“I’m aiming for 200% for the Tour de France,” Evenepoel concluded. “If all goes well and my recovery continues as planned, I’m confident I’ll be able to start in strong form and contend for a good result.”
