A groundbreaking new surf competition is set to make waves this February, and it won’t be organized by the World Surf League (WSL). The 2025 Natural Selection Surf will air in mid-February, marking a thrilling expansion of snowboarding legend Travis Rice’s renowned Natural Selection series, which is famous for its extreme backcountry freestyle events.
The competition will unfold in the picturesque and remote islands of Micronesia, providing a stunning backdrop of world-class waves. While full event details remain under wraps, organizers have promised an exciting new format that will distinguish it from traditional surf contests.
The aim of Natural Selection Surf is to showcase an eclectic group of surfers who will compete not only for the title but also for the ultimate bragging rights in one of the most sought-after locations in the sport. A few months ago, the event’s official social media hinted at the type of surfers they’re inviting, describing them as “the mad ones” — those who are spontaneous, unafraid of challenges, and often unpredictable. These athletes are expected to possess elite talent and the willingness to embrace the adventurous, competitive spirit of the event, all while bringing their own unique flavor to the sport.
“The surfers we want in this event are those who are down for anything,” said Natural Selection’s official Instagram post. “They’re fun, often flawed, and competitive, but also irreverent and always ready for an adventure.”
As of this week, the event’s organizers have begun unveiling the list of confirmed invitees, generating excitement among fans and experts alike. So far, the roster of athletes reflects exactly the kind of talent the event has promised.
The first surfer revealed was Mikey February, the South African standout known for his smooth, stylish surfing and impeccable flow. He was quickly followed by Coco Ho, a North Shore legend, and Kauli Vaast, the 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist. Other confirmed invitees include up-and-coming talent like Milla Coco Brown, a tube-riding specialist, Noah Beschen, a progressive air maestro, and the hard-charging Australian Anne Dos Santos. The list also features the unpredictable Eithan Osborne and more.
With Rob Machado leading the advisory committee, it’s no surprise that the competitor list already boasts some of the world’s top surfers — particularly those with a flair for style.
The 2025 Natural Selection Surf will be available to stream on YouTube and Red Bull TV on February 18 and 20, just days after the 2025 WSL season kicks off. This timing could offer an intriguing contrast between the two formats, highlighting the unique spirit of Natural Selection Surf in relation to the traditional competitive surf calendar.
As more names and details are revealed, surf fans can expect a thrilling, fresh approach to the sport. Stay tuned for further updates as the event draws nearer.
