A new development proposal for Bali’s east coast is raising concerns among surfers and local businesses, as plans for a marina and floating restaurant threaten the future of the renowned Keramas surf break.
Keramas, a favorite among regularfoot surfers, is famed for its high-performance righthand reefbreak. Known for its powerful tube sections and consistent waves ideal for hacks and airs, the spot has earned its place as one of Bali’s premier surf destinations. It has also played host to several World Surf League events and continues to draw surfers from around the globe.
However, the surf community is now voicing strong opposition to the proposed project, which could permanently alter the break. According to a statement from Komune Resort, a key business in the area that attracts surfers and tourists to Keramas, the construction of the marina would effectively destroy the wave, resulting in significant economic losses for both the local surf industry and tourism in Bali.
“Keramas is known as one of the best surfing locations in the world and has hosted three World Surf League events,” the statement reads. “This marina will permanently destroy the surf break, leading to the loss of thousands of tourists each year and a devastating impact on the surfing industry in Bali.”
While specific details about the development remain limited, the surf community is concerned about the long-term environmental impacts of such a project. Coastal developments, particularly marinas, have historically led to the deterioration or complete destruction of surf spots. The addition of a floating restaurant, an unprecedented proposal in the area, further raises questions about its potential effects on the wave, with some speculating about the possible risks of having a structure so close to the break.
The debate is ongoing, and the fate of Keramas remains uncertain. For now, the surf community and local businesses continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping to protect one of Bali’s most treasured surf locations.
