16th Annual ‘Camping for Hunger’ Helps Local Families

by Alice

For the 16th consecutive year, The River 95.3/WZRV’s Camping for Hunger event has made a significant difference in the lives of families in the northern Shenandoah Valley. Held in the week leading up to Thanksgiving, the campaign collected more than 12,100 pounds of food and raised $15,100 in monetary donations for the Front Royal/Warren County C-CAP pantry program.

Joanne Koszyk, Executive Director of C-CAP, highlighted the critical role these contributions will play in helping the community: “These donations are essential to meeting nearly nine months of food needs for families facing hunger in our area,” she said. “This year, we experienced an increase in demand compared to 2023, making these resources even more vital.”

C-CAP typically serves over 5,000 households annually, Koszyk added, underscoring the growing need for assistance in the region.

Over the course of the week-long event, the team from The River 95.3, including on-air personalities Lonnie Hill, Randy Woodward, Ryan Rutherford, and Scott Bradley, as well as station owner Andrew Shearer, camped out on a bus parked at Royal Plaza Shopping Center in Front Royal. The team broadcast live each day, rallying the community to contribute to the cause.

Andrew Shearer, President of Royal Broadcasting, praised the unwavering support from the community: “For 16 years, this community has demonstrated its commitment to helping those in need. We’re just the facilitators for the incredible work individuals, businesses, and organizations do to support this mission. I’m deeply humbled to be part of it.”

A Tradition of Giving

Since its launch in 2008, Camping for Hunger has raised over 216,000 pounds of food and more than $157,600 in cash donations. These efforts are a testament to the Shenandoah Valley’s dedication to combating hunger, supported by local businesses, schools, and civic groups hosting food drives and offering on-site assistance.

As the need continues to grow, events like Camping for Hunger remain essential in providing relief to families in the area. For more information on how to contribute or to view a full list of participating organizations, visit The River 95.3’s Camping for Hunger page.
