The iconic Jaws Big Wave Challenge, a fixture of Hawaii’s big wave surfing scene, is taking a digital turn for the 2024-2025 winter season. After not hosting a live event since 2019 due to pandemic-related challenges and permit issues, the World Surf League (WSL) recently announced that there will be no Jaws competition this winter. This has left many fans wondering whether the thrilling surf breaks of Pe’ahi, one of the world’s premier big-wave spots, will still see action on the competitive front.
In response to this void, a new competition is stepping in to fill the gap. Local surfer and fisherman Daniel Goldberg has launched the Pe’ahi Challenge, a season-long, video-based event designed to showcase high-level big-wave performances from Maui’s north shore. The new contest adopts a digital-first approach similar to other major surf events, including the SURFER Big Wave Challenge and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
A New Format, No Red Tape
The Pe’ahi Challenge does not require permits, corporate sponsorships, or live broadcasts. Instead, surfers simply need to show up at Jaws, ride the waves, and submit their footage. This streamlined format keeps the focus on the surfers and their performances, without the logistical hurdles that often accompany large-scale competitions.
Goldberg is offering a relatively modest prize purse of $6,000, funded by local businesses and supporters who are passionate about keeping big-wave surfing alive on the island. The prize money will be divided across 10 awards, including separate categories for male and female surfers. Each division will feature five award categories.
How It Works
The competition will run through March 1, 2025, with entries being accepted until midnight on February 28, 2025 (Hawaii Standard Time). To qualify for a submission, each ride must be accompanied by two photos and a video angle, complete with time and date stamps. Importantly, each ride must be a complete wave, meaning the surfer must ride away cleanly without wiping out. No submissions will be accepted for wipeouts or incomplete rides.
The categories up for grabs include Best Ride, Best Tow, Breakthrough Performer, People’s Choice, and Biggest Wave of the Season. The judging panel is made up of a distinguished group of big-wave surfers, including Mark Healey, Keala Kennelley, Jamie Sterling, Shaun Lopez, and Micah Nickens.
A Competitive Field
While the full list of participants is yet to be revealed, the Pe’ahi Challenge is expected to feature a number of notable big-wave surfers. Kai Lenny, known for his fearless tow-in surfing, is expected to put up some jaw-dropping rides. Albee Layer, with his consistent early-season form, and Tyler Larronde, whose first wave of the season could be a contender, are also names to watch.
