2024 Vans Pipe Masters: Official Invitees Confirmed

by Alice

Jamie O’Brien Returns to the Lineup: The Vans Pipe Masters is set to make its highly anticipated return this December, featuring an eclectic mix of seasoned wave riders from Hawaii, Polynesia, and beyond. Running from December 8 to 20, this iconic event transforms Oahu’s North Shore into the epicenter of competitive surfing, with its famed Pipeline offering thrilling, tube-riding action.

A Revamped Tradition: The Pipe Masters is a storied competition, steeped in history and revered for its drama. Traditionally a Championship Tour (CT) fixture, it has undergone a transformation in recent years. Now operated by Vans, the contest no longer serves as a World Surf League (WSL) CT or Qualifying Series (QS) event. This means it no longer crowns a world champion but instead delivers a fresh, inclusive format.

Rather than relying on WSL rankings or rigid trial rounds, the Pipe Masters invites a dynamic roster of surfers. This year’s lineup includes Hawaiian legends, experienced tour veterans, daring big-wave riders, second-generation Pipeline stars, and creative free surfers with unique perspectives on the sport.

Diverse Talent and a Bold Format: The Vans Pipe Masters shines as a platform for diversity, particularly for women surfers. Among the invitees, half are either Hawaiian residents or natives, underscoring the event’s commitment to inclusivity. Moana Jones Wong, the 2023 women’s champion known for her fearless barrel-riding, will return to defend her title, demonstrating how the new format gives rising talents a chance to shine.

Male and female competitors will vie for equal prize money, with $100,000 awarded to the winners in both categories. Each surfer competes in three rounds, with the top four advancing to the final showdown.

Familiar Faces and Fresh Drama: Although reigning men’s champion and WSL World Champion John John Florence has opted out, his brothers, Ivan and Nathan Florence, will step into the spotlight. Jamie O’Brien, who famously won the Pipe Masters as a wildcard 20 years ago, will also return. Initially absent from the invitee list, O’Brien’s inclusion followed a spirited debate on social media, adding a layer of intrigue to his comeback.

Last year’s winners, Balaram Stack and Molly Picklum, will also make their way to Honolulu to defend their titles. With a stacked field of 40 men and 20 women, the 2024 Pipe Masters promises electrifying performances at one of the world’s premier surf spots.

Winter Swells Are Here: Hawaii’s North Shore has already experienced early-season swells, setting the stage for another unforgettable contest. Since Fred Hemmings first organized the Pipe Masters in 1971, the event has embodied the pinnacle of competitive surfing. With the 2024 invitee list finalized and the waves rolling in, this year’s contest promises to uphold its legacy of thrill and spectacle.
