John John Florence on Fatherhood and Surfing

by Alice

John John Florence, the renowned surfing champion, recently shared insights into how fatherhood has reshaped his perspective on life and competition. While 2024 has been a year marked by significant milestones—including his third World Title and the birth of his son, Darwin—the arrival of his child has proven to be the most transformative event of his life.

Florence, who also participated in the Olympics and maintained his brand’s momentum, candidly discussed the challenges and joys of balancing family life with the demands of professional surfing in a recent podcast with Dave Prodan.

The Balancing Act: Fatherhood and Career

The year began with Florence facing an array of commitments: the World Surf League (WSL) Tour, the Olympics, and preparing for the arrival of his son. Despite the hectic schedule, Florence took a step-by-step approach, allowing him to fully embrace each moment.

“I think taking one step at a time has been the best thing I’ve done,” Florence explained. “It allowed me to enjoy every part of it. Having our baby and everything falling into place so I could still make it to Tahiti—it’s been a lot, but it’s been a lot of fun.”

The timing of Darwin’s birth was particularly tight, with Florence unsure whether the due date would conflict with his competition schedule. But, as Florence shared, his wife’s immense support, along with help from family, provided the stability he needed to remain focused on his career while also being present for his new family.

Shifting Priorities: Life Beyond Winning

The most significant change Florence has experienced since becoming a father is a shift in how he views competition. Prior to Darwin’s birth, victories and titles were the primary drivers of his career. Now, Florence admits that his perspective on success has evolved.

“My life doesn’t depend on winning or losing anymore,” Florence said. “Looking at him, I realize that this is the most important thing in my life. It’s a different kind of peace that comes with that realization.”

This new outlook has helped Florence manage the pressures of professional surfing. While he questioned whether to attend the Tahiti event shortly after becoming a father, he ultimately felt a sense of clarity and happiness. With a supportive partner and family around him, he was able to compete with a renewed sense of lightness and excitement.

Will Darwin Follow in His Father’s Footsteps?

As for the future, the big question remains: will Darwin follow his father’s path into surfing? Florence’s response was both humble and heartfelt.

“For my wife and I, we’re just focused on being the best versions of ourselves for him,” Florence said, adding a knowing smile. “But I guess the answer is probably yes.”

Florence’s words reflect the deep love and commitment he has for his son while acknowledging that the future is wide open—both for his family and for his continued career in surfing.

As he moves forward, John John Florence remains a dominant figure in the sport, but now with a refreshed perspective. The pursuit of titles may no longer define his life, but the joy of fatherhood has added a new, fulfilling dimension to his journey.
