Napier City Council is considering significant changes to its freedom camping regulations, which may include a ban on non-self-contained vehicles from designated camping areas.
Under the proposed amendments to a council bylaw, the National Aquarium of New Zealand’s car park could be designated as an additional freedom camping site, with four parking spaces allocated specifically for self-contained vehicles.
However, these changes may result in a net reduction of freedom camping locations in Napier, as the plans involve the permanent closure of two existing sites.
Currently, there are four designated freedom camping areas in Napier: the Napier Pump Track, Foreshore Reserve, Perfume Point, and Westshore Reserve, the latter of which is temporarily closed. Notably, Foreshore Reserve is the only site that currently allows non-self-contained vehicles, offering eight marked spaces available for up to two nights each.
