Seventeen-year-old surfer Erin Brooks has officially secured her spot on the 2025 Championship Tour after a stunning performance at the Corona Saquarema Pro. In a pivotal moment during heat 8 of the Round of 32, Brooks scored a remarkable 9 with a powerful ride, marking the highest wave score of the event. Following her achievement, she shared an emotional embrace with her father on the beach amid cheers from a lively crowd.
Brooks’s qualification comes on the heels of her standout wildcard performance at the Fiji Pro this summer, where she made history as the first Canadian woman to win a Championship Tour event. Despite her impressive feats, Brooks diligently followed the Challenger Series pathway. She kicked off her season with a victory at Snapper and reached the finals at Narrabeen, though she faced some challenges with two 25th-place finishes in Ballito and Portugal, and a ninth at the US Open. With two throwaway results, she currently ranks fourth in the Challenger Series standings.
In an Instagram post, Brooks expressed her gratitude: “Qualifying in Brazil in front of the best surf fans in the world is something I will never forget. Thank you so much to the @wsl for this opportunity and also thank you to my family, friends, sponsors, coaches, trainers, and everyone who has been a part of my journey to this moment. It takes a team and I am so thankful for all of you. I still can’t believe I get to travel and compete with the world’s best surfers. Dreams do come true!!”
Brooks’s achievement is not without precedent; 2023 world champion Caroline Marks qualified at age 15, while 2024 champion Caity Simmers made the cut at 16, later opting to sit out a year before requalifying. Known for her exceptional skill in heavy barrels, Brooks combines speed and technical prowess, showcasing her versatility at various wave types. Her potential to excel at iconic surf spots, including Pipeline, Lowers, and Teahupo’o, positions her as a formidable competitor in the upcoming season.
As she prepares to join a lineup of elite surfers like Caity Simmers, Caroline Marks, Molly Picklum, and Bettylou Sakura Johnson, the anticipation for the future of women’s surfing continues to build. Brooks’s journey is set to captivate fans as she steps into her new role on the world stage.
