This year’s Hong Kong Cyclothon attracted a record 6,000 participants, including four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome and two-time Olympic medallist Sarah Lee.
The 50-kilometre race commenced at 5:15 a.m. on Sunday from Tsim Sha Tsui, traversing notable landmarks such as the Tsing Ma Bridge, Ting Kau Bridge, and Stonecutters Bridge, along with several tunnels.
Froome expressed his enthusiasm for his first Cyclothon experience, noting that riding in Hong Kong offers a unique perspective compared to racing in Europe. “Seeing Hong Kong by bike through all the main roads is such a pleasure,” he remarked, highlighting the rarity of such an opportunity for cyclists.
Lee, participating for the third time, shared that this year she focused more on enjoying the ride rather than speed. She praised the Stonecutters Bridge, stating, “When you actually ride a bike on the bridge, it’s a different feeling.” However, she noted the challenges posed by sharp U-turns along the route, suggesting that earlier traffic signs would improve safety.
In addition to the race, the Tourism Board hosted a sports carnival at the West Kowloon Cultural District, featuring local food stalls, yoga sessions, and freestyle cycling performances.
