The Feather River Land Trust is inviting the public to experience the beauty of the Sierra Valley Preserve under the light of a full moon through its Full Moon Howlers hiking group. This upcoming hike will take participants along a 4-mile, family-friendly trail, providing a unique opportunity to enjoy the serene landscape at night, illuminated by the full moon and a blanket of stars.
Participants are asked to gather at 7 p.m. at the north entrance of the Sierra Valley Preserve. For those attending, it’s recommended to wear hiking boots, dress in warm layers, and bring a headlamp. The event is free, and registration is available online.
Organizers assure that the hike is suitable for all experience levels. The 4-mile round-trip trail is mostly flat, though certain sections may be uneven. Hikers will also learn about the diverse wildlife that inhabits the Sierra Valley Preserve, as well as the various phases and names of the moon.
For families, it is important to note that children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Additionally, participants will need to complete a liability form, which can be downloaded from the confirmation email they will receive upon registration.

Sierra Valley Preserve: A Biodiversity Haven
Since 2003, the Feather River Land Trust, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy and the Northern Sierra Partnership, has been working to protect and develop the Sierra Valley Preserve. Spanning 2,575 acres, it is California’s largest mountain valley and serves as a vital point along the Pacific Flyway, making it a hotspot for biodiversity.
The preserve is located at the headwaters of the scenic Middle Fork Feather River, and plans are underway to establish it as a hub for nature-based recreation and learning. In addition to the trails already in place, new paths, interpretive signs, picnic areas, and a nature center offering educational programs are in development to enhance visitors’ experiences.
This full moon hike offers not only a night of adventure but also an opportunity to connect with nature and learn about the remarkable ecosystem of the Sierra Valley Preserve.
