This fall, 18 lakes across Iowa are set to receive trout, providing fishing opportunities for local anglers.
In southwest Iowa, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will stock Big Lake in Council Bluffs with trout at 3 p.m. on October 18. Each location will receive between 1,000 and 2,000 rainbow trout as part of the DNR’s cool weather trout program. This initiative aims to bring trout to areas that cannot sustain them during the summer months.
The fall community trout stockings are ideal for families looking to introduce children to fishing. Anglers can use simple gear, such as a small hook with a night crawler or corn under a bobber, or basic spinners like Panther Martin or Mepps. These events make it easier for Iowans to fish without traveling to northeast Iowa.
To enhance the experience, family-friendly events often accompany the stocking. These events help ensure that anglers have fun and success while fishing. Interested individuals can check the Iowa DNR Trout Fishing website for information on specific lakes hosting events.
The trout stocking program is funded through the sales of the trout fee. Anglers are required to have a valid fishing license and pay the trout fee to fish for or keep trout. The daily limit is five trout per licensed angler, with a possession limit of ten.
Children aged 15 or younger can fish for trout with a licensed adult, but their catch is limited to one daily limit. However, they can purchase a trout fee to catch their own limit.
