Colorado’s Sand Creek Elementary Receives Outdoor Learning Environment
Students and staff at Sand Creek Elementary in Colorado are set to transform their educational experience with the introduction of an Outdoor Classroom, awarded by Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds (BNP). This innovative space, located in the schoolyard, promises to enhance learning opportunities for years to come.
Outdoor classrooms bridge the gap between indoor learning and nature, allowing students to engage with their curriculum in an interactive environment. The new facility at Sand Creek features student seating and standing pods, a teacher station, a blackboard, and natural elements such as trees, creating a comprehensive outdoor learning space.
As children increasingly spend time indoors and on digital devices, their connection to nature—and the associated benefits—has diminished. Research indicates that outdoor learning can lead to:
- Improved attendance for both students and teachers.
- Enhanced mental health outcomes.
- A deeper appreciation for nature, fostering a desire to protect the environment.
“We have a passionate team of educators excited to support outdoor learning. Our existing garden club is a favorite among students, and the new outdoor classroom provides the necessary infrastructure for expanded outdoor education and exploration. We are grateful to BNP for this generous addition,” said Principal Pam Pekarek.
Bienenstock aims for the launch of the Sand Creek Elementary outdoor classroom to inspire other schools and childcare centers across Canada and the U.S. to participate in their contest, which reopen for applications on September 26, 2024.
