In an unexpected moment before Auburn’s matchup against Oklahoma, a cheerleader stole the spotlight with a backflip that ended in a surprising collision with an Oklahoma player.
As the Sooners made their entrance at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium, a fan captured video of an Auburn cheerleader performing a series of energetic backflips. The routine took a sudden turn when the cheerleader’s foot unintentionally connected with the helmet of Oklahoma defensive back Makari Vickers.
The incident, though unintended, sparked immediate buzz on social media. Auburn fans jokingly compared the cheerleader’s acrobatic mishap to a stunt from a high-octane action film, while others marveled at the near-perfect timing of the backflip kick.
Vickers, a sophomore defensive back, played in eight games last season but has yet to make an impact on the stat sheet this year. A highly touted four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, he entered the season with great expectations but was clearly caught off guard by this pregame “hit.”
Despite the unconventional start, Auburn initially took control of the game, going into halftime with a 14-7 lead, thanks to two long touchdown passes from quarterback Payton Thorne, who had recently been reinstated as the starter. However, Oklahoma fought back in the second half, ultimately securing a 27-21 victory. The game’s turning point came when Oklahoma’s Kip Lewis intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, sealing the win for the 21st-ranked Sooners.
While the cheerleader’s backflip may have been the most viral moment of the game, the final score left Auburn fans with much more to think about than just an unexpected kick.
