Surfer Rescued from Oxnard Beach Dies Later at Hospital

A surfer who was rescued from the water at Oxnard’s Mandalay State Beach on Thursday morning has died, authorities confirmed.

Emergency services received a call shortly before 10:20 a.m. regarding a man who appeared unresponsive in the water near the intersection of Mandalay Beach Road and Seabreeze Way. According to Oxnard Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike McCaslin, a woman walking nearby noticed the man while he was surfing. Upon returning to the area, she found him floating face down.

The woman immediately jumped into the water to rescue him and managed to bring him to shore. Afterward, she called 911, where dispatchers guided her through CPR techniques, primarily chest compressions.

Paramedics and fire personnel arrived promptly, continuing lifesaving efforts as the man was transported by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. State lifeguards were also on scene, assisting in the rescue.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Captain James Sullivan. Initial estimates placed the victim’s age at approximately 55, though officials later revised this figure. He was believed to be a resident of Ventura.

The California State Parks personnel were the first to respond to the incident, as it occurred within their jurisdiction. The sheriff’s office has since been notified and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the surfer’s death.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, as authorities are in the process of notifying his family.
