WELD, Maine — An 84-year-old woman from Massachusetts sustained a head injury while hiking on Tumbledown Mountain’s southeast side on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Parker Ridge Trail, prompting a response from Maine Game Wardens and local emergency agencies.
Donna Hobart of Springfield was found by first responders from the Weld Fire Department, who assessed her condition along the trail. According to a spokesperson from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Hobart was able to walk down with assistance.
Rescue teams, including the Weld and Wilton Fire Departments, along with volunteers from Franklin Search and Rescue, aided Hobart in descending the trail. She was ultimately transported the final half-mile to the trailhead on an ATV by the Warden Service.
Parker Ridge Trail, noted in the Appalachian Mountain Club’s “Maine Mountain Guide,” is one of the oldest trails on Tumbledown Mountain, featuring a steep ascent and a brook crossing. AllTrails categorizes the hike as “challenging,” with an elevation gain of nearly 2,000 feet. The extent of Hobart’s injuries has not been disclosed.
