Lucas Chianca and Steve Roberson Stand Out at Jaws and Nazaré
The renowned surf breaks of Jaws and Nazaré have once again produced remarkable performances in 2024, leading to three nominations for this year’s SURFER Big Wave Challenge. Notably, the first nominee is 16-year-old Steve Roberson, who made waves during a significant session on Black Friday in November. At just 15 years old, Roberson tackled what is estimated to be a 50-foot wave at the formidable Pe’ahi. Esteemed surfers Kelly Slater and Jamie O’Brien praised the ride, with Slater calling it “incredible” and O’Brien describing it as “legendary.”
Following Roberson’s impressive feat, Lucas Chianca showcased his skill and bravery at Nazaré. He secured two of the largest waves of the year within just four days, thanks to a powerful low-pressure system that swept over Europe in late February. The first wave, which he attempted to ride left, demonstrated the intensity and unpredictability of Nazaré, though Chianca unfortunately could not complete the ride as the whitewater engulfed him. However, he redeemed himself on the second attempt, successfully navigating a significant right-hand wave, expertly drawing from the bottom into the pocket of an enormous peak. His ability to read and ride the challenging conditions of Praia do Norte is a testament to his surfing prowess.
The anticipation builds as the surfing community eagerly awaits the announcement of the winners at the SURFER Big Wave Challenge award show, set to take place on October 19 at Nazaré. Will it be Roberson or Chianca who claims the coveted title?
