MYSURU: The Karnataka Tourism Department has proposed introducing water sports at the backwaters of Taraka and Nugu dams in HD Kote taluk, Mysuru, as part of efforts to draw more tourists to the area.
The dams, located near the Dammanakatte Safari range in the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, are envisioned as new hotspots for water-based activities. The proposal aims to enhance tourist interest by offering various water sports, including cruise boats, skurfing, water scooters, jet skiing, and paddle boats.
To support this initiative, the tourism department has submitted a formal proposal to the state government. It includes plans to build essential infrastructure such as toilets, accommodation, staff quarters, and the introduction of these water sports activities.
Currently, the state forest department is already promoting eco-tourism and safari experiences in the Dammanakatte area and other parts of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.
Assistant Director of Tourism, Prabhuswamy AN, said that the department has requested HD Kote tahsildar and other local officials to identify appropriate locations along the backwaters of the Taraka and Nugu dams. The goal is to create an attractive aqua tourism destination that not only generates government revenue but also provides entertainment for water sports enthusiasts. This project is also expected to create jobs for local residents.
HD Kote MLA Anil Chikkamadu has been actively supporting this plan. He mentioned that he has requested Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to approve the tourism department’s proposal to launch boating and water sports activities at the Taraka and Nugu dams, located within his constituency. He believes that these activities will help attract more visitors, as many already come to the nearby Dammanakatte Wildlife Safari in the Bandipur forest.
“The government has also begun implementing measures to make these areas more tourist-friendly,” said Chikkamadu. “This includes the construction of approach roads, installation of lights, fencing, and CCTV cameras to ensure safety. These projects, costing 7 crore rupees, are already underway.”
The tourism department is optimistic that these efforts will elevate the popularity of the region as a major tourist destination.
