In recognition of the need for a quieter Independence Day celebration, several Michigan state parks are offering fireworks-free camping options. Sleepy Hollow State Park is among those designated as safe havens for veterans during the Fourth of July weekend, where fireworks are prohibited.
Christyn Herman, spokesperson for the Michigan Veteran Affairs Agency, emphasized the importance of providing a peaceful environment for veterans and others affected by loud noises and sudden sounds, which can trigger PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). “Having a fireworks-free Fourth of July celebration, especially at our DNR parks, is really important to give veterans and those with PTSD space to celebrate with their family in a safe, quiet environment,” Herman stated.
According to Herman, there are over 4,000 veterans in Clinton County and another 11,000 in Ingham County who may benefit from these designated areas. Sleepy Hollow State Park is one of eleven state parks across Michigan where fireworks will not be permitted during the holiday weekend.
“Fireworks can sound like explosions or gunfire, which can be triggering for veterans,” Herman explained. “Providing these quiet spaces allows them to celebrate in a controlled environment without fear of triggering PTSD symptoms.”
For veterans like Hunter Garcia, who served in Afghanistan, holidays like the Fourth of July can evoke trauma responses due to the similarity between fireworks and combat sounds. Garcia expressed, “Fourth of July used to be my favorite holiday, but it’s basically been taken over by a trauma response that I haven’t gotten control over yet.”
The initiative includes a dedicated webpage, “Fireworks Free Fourth,” aimed at providing resources and information for military veterans suffering from PTSD or similar conditions.
