Tragic Incident: 10-Year-Old Boy Dies After Hiking in Extreme Heat at South Mountain

PHOENIX — A 10-year-old boy has tragically passed away after succumbing to heat exhaustion while hiking with family members in scorching temperatures at South Mountain on Tuesday.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to a distress call around 2 p.m., alerting them to a heat-related medical emergency during the family’s hike. Firefighters from multiple departments quickly mobilized to the scene.

Upon arrival, responders located the boy approximately a mile into the trail. Immediate medical intervention was initiated, and the boy was airlifted from the mountain for further treatment.

Despite efforts to stabilize his condition, the child was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he did not survive the heat-related incident.

Tuesday’s temperature in Phoenix soared to 113 degrees Fahrenheit, exacerbating the already challenging conditions for hikers, according to the National Weather Service.

The Phoenix Police Department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
