SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Sarasota County Emergency Services are emphasizing the importance of safety protocols during outdoor sports activities.
Residents are advised to adhere to the following guidelines:
1. Visibility of Lightning: Outdoor activities should cease upon sighting lightning, taking into account varying factors such as time of day, weather conditions, and obstructions.
2. Audible Thunder: If thunder is heard, it indicates that a storm is likely within a 10-mile radius. However, factors like traffic noise, wind, and precipitation can limit audible detection to distances less than 10 miles.
3. Threatening Skies: Even if a storm appears distant, thunderstorms can swiftly move overhead, with lightning potentially occurring as they enter an area.
The National Weather Service echoes these precautions, urging the public that “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
This advisory underscores the proactive measures necessary to ensure the safety of individuals engaged in outdoor recreational activities throughout Sarasota County.
