WALKER, W.Va. (WTAP) – Camp Kootaga in Walker, West Virginia, is marking its 102nd year of operation as the new summer season kicks off. Despite the sweltering heat, campers from several states are eagerly participating in a range of activities designed to help them earn merit badges. These activities include rock climbing, fire building, water training, and various other skills.
Hunter Trippett, a youth staff member at Camp Kootaga, reflects on his long-standing involvement with the camp.
“I’ve been coming here since a very young age,” Trippett said. “I actually started scouting a little early because I was really excited to get into it. I started around kindergarten, which would’ve been about 14 years ago.”
Climbing Director Christopher Burk emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated in the hot weather.
“Every program area has water that is piped in,” Burk explained. “We constantly remind them, ‘Drink lots of water!’”
Burk also notes the lasting friendships that form at Camp Kootaga.
“People who came to Camp Kootaga back in the ’80s and met different scout units are still friends to this day,” Burk said. “As we say, Kootaga means good friends.”
Trippett hopes to continue contributing to Camp Kootaga for as long as possible.
“I would love to be here as long as I can,” Trippett added. “Maybe there will be a time when I won’t be able to work here, but I really love working here. This camp gave me a lot, so I’m trying to give back what I can.”
