Veteran Climber Sacrifices Home to Conquer World’s Highest Peaks

by Alice

REMBAU: N. Elanghovan, a 65-year-old retiree from Tenaga Nasional Bhd, has made headlines by conquering three of the world’s tallest mountains, a feat he achieved after selling his house to finance his expeditions.

Elanghovan, now residing in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, undertook his remarkable climbs in his 60s, defying conventional retirement pursuits. His journey began with Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in Tanzania in 2018, followed by Mount Everest (8,849m) in Nepal four years later, and culminating with Mount Denali (6,190m) in Alaska last year.

Reflecting on his experiences, Elanghovan shared that Mount Denali posed the greatest challenge, surpassing even Mount Everest. He recounted enduring temperatures plummeting to -30 degrees Celsius, battling blustery winds, and navigating treacherous snowstorms without the aid of a guide. His climb involved setting up camps, hauling heavy equipment through snowy terrain, and enduring conditions that tested his physical and mental resilience.

“The view from the summit of Mount Denali was spectacular,” Elanghovan recalled. “It made all the sacrifices worthwhile.”

His passion for climbing was ignited later in life, inspired by a desire for physical and mental vigor post-retirement. Raised near Cameron Highlands, Elanghovan developed an affinity for mountains early on, which later evolved into a full-fledged pursuit of peak conquests.

Acknowledging the financial strain of such expeditions, Elanghovan disclosed that he financed his climbs by selling his second house in Shah Alam, Selangor, generating RM300,000. He opted against hiring a guide for Mount Denali, a decision that significantly reduced costs but heightened the risks.

Looking forward, Elanghovan aims to summit the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each continent, including Mount Elbrus in Russia and Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains resolute in sharing his knowledge and inspiring younger generations to pursue their passions.

“I believe it’s never too late to embark on new adventures,” Elanghovan remarked. “Maintaining good health and a positive mindset are crucial.”

His achievements stand as a testament to perseverance and dedication, illustrating that age is no barrier to reaching new heights, both literally and metaphorically.
