Shillong, April 26 – The Government of Meghalaya, responding to the ongoing scorching heatwave affecting the state, has issued a directive aimed at safeguarding students and staff across educational institutions. The notification, released on Friday by the Director of School Education & Literacy, Swapnil Tembe, outlines stringent precautions to be followed by all schools.
The order mandates that schools refrain from organizing any outdoor activities or sports during the prevailing heatwave and in future instances of similar weather conditions. Additionally, schools are required to provide ample hydration facilities within their premises, ensuring access to drinking water and shaded areas for students and staff.
In the event of severe dehydration, the directive emphasizes immediate transportation of affected students to the nearest healthcare facility for prompt medical attention.
Temperature readings in key locations across Meghalaya paint a picture of the severity of the heatwave. As of Friday at noon, Shillong recorded 28°C, Nongpoh stood at 33°C, and Tura sweltered at 35°C.
To mitigate the impact of the heatwave on students, the government has advised continuous hydration by encouraging students to bring their own water bottles. Schools are directed to make Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) or lemon water available as a precautionary measure against dehydration.
During peak heat hours from 12 pm to 3 pm, schools are advised to minimize students’ exposure to direct sunlight. If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, students are encouraged to use caps or umbrellas for protection.
Furthermore, the order prohibits students from walking barefoot inside or near school premises to prevent heat-related injuries.
Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the state government has urged local authorities, emergency services, and healthcare providers to work closely with schools. Schools are instructed to establish communication with nearby healthcare facilities and maintain readily accessible contact details for emergencies.
This proactive approach by the Government of Meghalaya underscores its commitment to prioritizing the well-being and safety of students during challenging weather conditions.
