The Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) program at Grand Canyon National Park has launched an innovative initiative, the HIKE SMART film project, aimed at bolstering hiking safety awareness among park visitors.
Recognizing the evolving communication landscape and the growing impact of social media, PSAR managers acknowledged the necessity to modernize their messaging approach. With platforms like YouTube and social media platforms shaping public discourse, the staff developed a strategy utilizing engaging video content to effectively communicate crucial safety messages.
PSAR Coordinator, Meghan Smith, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We’re thrilled to unveil this film project, which represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to promote hiking safety at Grand Canyon.” Smith emphasized the importance of engaging storytelling and collaboration with partners in empowering visitors to make informed decisions while enjoying the park.
For this project, the team enlisted Harlan Tanney and Sandcast Media as ideal partners. Leveraging their extensive experience in northern Arizona, the collaborators seamlessly integrated their local knowledge and dedication to conservation into the project.
The film is now accessible on the park’s website and YouTube channel, thanks to the support provided by the Grand Canyon Conservancy. This initiative marks a concerted effort by PSAR to utilize contemporary communication methods to enhance visitor safety and enjoyment of the park’s natural wonders.
