Authorities Stress Precautionary Measures for Mountain Hiking

by Alice

As hiking season commences, police stations in Troodos and Platres receive distress calls from hikers requiring rescue or assistance due to disorientation or injuries incurred during their expeditions.

In numerous rescue operations, it’s been observed that hikers often underestimate the inherent dangers of mountain trails, neglecting to take essential precautionary measures.

A recent incident involving a British family’s misadventure in the Madari area has heightened concerns among law enforcement and civil defense authorities. Despite encountering communication hurdles, technology aided in locating the family safe but disoriented near the Spilia community, close to the Madari trail.

Deputy Lieutenant Andreas Pringipas, head of the Troodos Station, highlighted the escalating frequency of rescue calls, citing seven incidents in the first quarter of 2024 alone. The opening of Troodos National Forest Park trails in March has contributed to increased foot traffic in the area.

Troodos boasts a network of picturesque nature trails, both linear and circular, which conceal various hazards. Pringipas stressed the imperative for visitors to adhere to safety protocols to prevent endangering their lives unnecessarily.

“We frequently receive distress calls from hikers jeopardizing their safety due to reckless behavior,” Pringipas remarked.

Upon receiving rescue requests, authorities swiftly mobilize resources, coordinating efforts among relevant services including the police, fire service, and civil defense. In extreme cases, the police’s aviation wing may be deployed for inaccessible locations.

Prior to embarking on a mountain hike, individuals are urged to familiarize themselves with trail specifics, including difficulty level, hazardous sections, duration, and weather forecasts. Essential supplies such as water, food, a flashlight, and a first aid kit should be carried, along with appropriate attire and footwear.

“Mountain hiking entails inherent risks, necessitating proper equipment to mitigate potential accidents,” Pringipas emphasized.

Weather conditions are notoriously volatile in mountainous regions, with sudden changes posing additional challenges for hikers. Timely estimation of hiking duration is crucial for safety.

Smartphone applications equipped with location-sharing capabilities are recommended tools for hikers, enabling immediate tracking in case of emergencies or disorientation.

Pringipas reiterated that mountain trails should be approached with caution and respect, emphasizing that they are not platforms for exhibitionism or competition.
