RFU Open to Hosting Chelsea Matches at Twickenham

by Alice

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has expressed willingness to host Chelsea matches at Twickenham if the Premier League club requires a temporary home. However, local council opposition could complicate the move.

Richmond Council Could Block Move to Twickenham

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney has confirmed that discussions about hosting Chelsea at Twickenham have occurred before, but Richmond Borough Council is likely to challenge the move. Chelsea has been exploring options for a new home, with a potential temporary move to Twickenham considered back in 2017. The club continues to assess whether to upgrade Stamford Bridge or relocate to Earl’s Court.

Financial Benefit for the RFU

Hosting Chelsea would bring a significant financial boost to the RFU, which is facing financial struggles after announcing record losses last November. Sweeney acknowledged the financial benefits but highlighted that the council would likely raise concerns about the impact on local residents, such as the number of fans and potential disruption.

Twickenham’s Potential for Hosting Football

Sweeney confirmed that the RFU’s license could allow Chelsea to play at Twickenham, but Richmond Borough Council’s concerns about local impact could complicate the process. While hosting Chelsea would bring financial gains, the local community’s sensitivity to large-scale events remains a key issue.

Twickenham’s Future and RFU’s Plans

The RFU is planning a £660 million redevelopment of Twickenham, which would transform the stadium. However, if Richmond Borough does not grant the necessary license for additional events, the RFU is considering alternatives such as Milton Keynes or Birmingham. Currently, Twickenham is limited to hosting only three events per year, with a maximum of two consecutive nights, and a reduced capacity of 55,000. The RFU is lobbying the council to increase the number of events to 15 per year with a capacity of 75,000.

Ongoing Talks with Richmond Borough

Sweeney described the ongoing discussions with Richmond Borough as cooperative and positive. He emphasized the importance of hosting non-rugby events for the financial viability of Twickenham, noting that venues like Wembley and the O2 Arena are also able to host large-scale events. The RFU hopes for a decision from Richmond Borough by September.

England’s Summer Tour and TV Deal

Meanwhile, England’s summer rugby tour will be televised on Sky Sports after a deal was reached. This follows concerns that England’s matches would again be overlooked by major broadcasters. England will play two tests against Argentina before concluding the tour with a match against the USA in Washington.

Changes to England’s Coaching Staff

England’s head coach Steve Borthwick has added Bath’s Lee Blackett and Sale’s Byron McGuigan to his coaching staff for the summer tour. Blackett will oversee the attack while McGuigan will assist with the defense.
